The Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) is excited to announce the World Championship Ranch Rodeo and Youth World Championship Ranch Rodeo will again be available via livestream, allowing rodeo fans everywhere to tune in to the excitement. The 29th World Championship Ranch Rodeo will livestream on Ride TV, Nov. 14-17, 2024.

The Championship brings together 25 elite ranch teams at the Amarillo Convention Center in Amarillo, Texas, to compete in ranch bronc riding, stray gathering, penning, branding and wild cow milking. For nearly three decades, fans have been selling out Championship performances, but with the livestream, those unable to purchase tickets or make the trip to Amarillo will still be able to experience the energy and excitement of the event from wherever they are.

In addition to all four performances of the World Championship Ranch Rodeo, WRCA will also livestream the 4th Annual Youth World Championship Ranch Rodeo, spotlighting the next generation of the sport.

“With tickets often selling out early, making the rodeo accessible to more fans has been a priority,” said Association Manager Leman Wall. “The support for the World Championship Ranch Rodeo from fans worldwide has been incredible, and we’re excited to offer a front-row seat for more people through the livestream.”

The fan-favorite Ranch Rodeo Report sports desk segment, hosted by Bob Welch, will also return, providing performance highlights, leaderboard updates and interviews with ranch teams. Catch the Ranch Rodeo Report free on WRCA’s social media channels.

Learn more about the available livestream packages HERE.

Coverage of the championship will be livestreamed by Equine Promotions, part of the Equine Network, one of the nation’s largest equine-focused media companies. With more than two decades of industry-leading event coverage experience, Equine Promotions has streamed some of the biggest events in the industry, including the Cinch Timed Event Championship, Riata Buckle and World’s Greatest Horseman.

Where to watch the 2024 Riata Championships

The Riata—the premier team roping stallion incentive program—kicks off its third Championships in Guthrie, Oklahoma, at the Lazy E Arena, poised to pay $3.5 million in 2024 and streaming live on Roping.com.

By providing stallion owners and breeders with a unique marketing advantage, the program enhances the value of participating horses’ progeny, ultimately shaping the future of the roping industry. Riata brings together stallion owners, mare owners, breeders and ropers, offering competitors of all skill levels the chance to win unprecedented prize money in the roping futurity world. This innovative program is defining and creating the next generation of elite rope horses.

The Riata kicks off with its  Pro Futurity with $200,000 in added money, plus $50,000 in guaranteed payout to the 4-year-old incentive on a $1,000-per-roper fee. The Pro Futurity is scheduled as early in the week as possible to allow PRCA cowboys at the end of their regular season to fit both the Riata Open and Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s Cinch Governor’s Cup that starts Sept. 26.

Every roping will have $200,000 in added money with a $50,000 futurity incentive, with the age on that incentive bumping to 5-and-under in the #14.5 and #12.5 All-Ages to 6-and-under from the #10.5 down to the new #8.5. Proxy horses in those divisions will be eligible for equal payoff, minus a 20% commission—a change from previous years when the Riata horse received all the added money.

Riata will reintroduce its breakaway roping as a $250,000-guaranteed event, combining Riata, Pink and Ruby Buckle horses on a three-head average with two full rounds and a short, splitting the short round in half, with one short round featuring the fastest half of the two-head times, and the other featuring the bottom slowest half.

A #5.5-and-under Cowgirls Steer Stopping will join the Riata lineup in 2024 with $40,000
guaranteed on a $500 fee.

Breakawaying on your head horse can be an excellent way to instill the fundamentals, but be sure to add a heeler to your training sessions every once in a while to get more out of your practice. In this video brought to you by Cactus RopesTrevor Brazile explains how breakawaying with a heeler can add intensity to the run, address bad habits and reinforce good ones.

About Trevor Brazile:

Roping.com coach Trevor Brazile is the winningest cowboy in professional rodeo history, with $7 million in career earnings and 26 gold buckles. The sport’s elite all-around hand, Brazile has won over $800,000 in Cinch Timed Event Championship competition alone. Since leaving the rodeo arena full-time in 2019, Brazile has changed his focus to making the best young horses in the roping industry. He’s already won hundreds of thousands in American Rope Horse Futurity Association competition, and his training style and philosophy are based on fundamentals and consistency.

“Futurities have started judging the corner of the horse. That maneuver is judged on how it affects the steer. Everything is focused on handling the steer.”

Whether getting ready for a big event or prepping a young horse for its first futurity, Trevor Brazile is a stickler for a sharp face in a head horse. Trying to get your head horse’s facing dialed in? This playlist of rope horse training videos is a great place to start.

1. Heading Horsemanship and Facing

Watch here.

From Brazile and Patrick Smith’s Legend DVD, this video takes you through Trevor Brazile’s full philosophy on tuning a head horse in a variety of scenarios, with a strong emphasis on the most overlooked part of a run: the face. Brazile explains his facing techniques and the exercises he uses to get a faster, cleaner finish.

2. Body Position in the Face

Watch here.

In just 3.5 minutes, Brazile and his Relentless Remuda partner Miles Baker review how your body movement affects your horse’s hips in the face.

3. Facing Drill with a Tire

Watch here.

Shot at Baker’s Oklahoma ranch, Brazile explains how he drags a tire with a head horse to work on pushing his horse forward and finishing in the middle of the arena.

4. Refining the Face with a Tire Drill

Watch here.

Baker and Brazile talk through using a tire to work on keeping control of the steer through the face, preventing the horse’s shoulders from falling into the horse’s nose.

5. Understanding Head Control to Optimize Facing

Watch here.

In less than 2 minutes, Brazile will change your understanding of head control in the face. Brazile teaches a horse to face with cheek control, and you’ve probably never seen anyone explain the face like this.

3 Tips for Leaving Flat From the Box https://teamropingjournal.com/video/3-tips-for-leaving-flat-from-the-box/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 21:45:11 +0000 https://teamropingjournal.com/?p=32466

Riding The Darkk Side, Trevor Brazile explains what it means to leave flat from the box and how he uses his body to stay with his horse from the corner to the steer.

The post 3 Tips for Leaving Flat From the Box appeared first on The Team Roping Journal.

]]>

A smooth, balanced, flat departure from the box sets the stage for a successful run. If your horse is squatting back, requiring them to lunge into action, their balance is skewed and you risk missing the barrier and poorly setting up your first swing. In this Roping.com video, Trevor Brazile shares his tips for leaving flat from the box.

1. Gauge the necessary rein pressure

Watch the full video here.

Every horse is different and requires a different level of pressure to stay light and responsive. Maintain a strong enough hold so that your release cue is a clear signal, but not so much that you’re sitting your horse back too far. The lighter the horse, the more definite you have to be with your “leave” and “stay” cues.

2. DON’T sit too forward

Watch the full video here.

“A lot of times, people want to get to the front of their saddle faster,” Brazile says. “And in order to do that, they get their toes down and get their body over the horn. And to me, these horses are too powerful for that. I think that’s setting yourself up for failure. Because once these horses leave the way they should, if you’re already up, your horse will shoot out from under you and you’ll pull up the reins.”

3. DO sit back and use your horse’s momentum

Watch the full video here.

“When I’m sitting in the box, I’m pretty much as far to the back of the saddle as I can be,” Brazile says. “When the horse leaves, I’m already as far back as he can put me. And so when I feel like I can use his momentum, then I’ll be with the horse when I get to the front.

“I see a lot of people trying to stand up and be to the front, but they can only stay there for a second and then they have to fight back to the front.”

Help your head horse hunt their target with these training tips from Trevor Brazile and Miles Baker.

A horse with an autopilot draw to cattle will almost always give you a leg up in competition. While some head horses naturally have that instinct, there are also ways to develop and build the skill. In this video brought to you by Cactus RopesTrevor Brazile and Miles Baker explain how to create “draw” in training.

“The heading is so competitive nowadays, you see a lot of horses reached on or they learn to run a route, but they don’t have the magnetic draw to the cow that keeps them good over the test of time,” Brazile says. “Today we’re going to show you how to put that in your horses from an early age.”

Breakaway roping teaches young heel horse prospects to focus on finding the cow. In this video brought to you by Cactus Ropes, Miles Baker explains the benefits of breakawaying on green heel horses to teach them the fundamentals of tracking.

“We’ll breakaway on head horses, heel horses, anything. I’m not worried about what lead he’s in. I’m not worried about anything except finding the cow right out of the chute and going to the cow. Because if they will go to the cow, then we can shape them off of it later and worry about leads and everything else then.”

Boot up.

Booting up your horse is cheap insurance for their health and longevity. Protective boots help support the soft tissues of your horse’s legs and minimize the chance of injury. In this video brought to you by Professional’s Choice, seven-time NFR-qualifying team roper Coleman Proctor shares why he uses boots to protect and support his horse’s legs.

“Whenever we’re making the turn coming through the corner, I know my horse is really having to dig deep… It gives me a lot of relief thinking about how much protection he’s got helping his suspensory ligament because it really goes down into the ground.”

Boot up and save! Until 12/31/23, you can save $10 off a two-pack or $20 off a four-pack of Professional’s Choice Sport’s Medicine Boot. Shop online or visit your favorite local retailer.

About Coleman Proctor:

Since turning pro in 2004, Coleman Proctor has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo seven times. In 2022, he finished sixth in the team roping (heading) world standings. Throughout his career, Proctor has earned more than $1.5 million in prize money, cementing his status as one of the top earners in the sport. Proctor, his wife, and two daughters live in Pryor, Oklahoma.

Cesar de la Cruz joins Roping.com’s coaching lineup this winter, bringing a one-of-a-kind series that incorporates dummy roping, goat-roping, donkey roping and live-cattle practice sessions for the whole family.

A nine-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo heeler, de la Cruz cut his teeth in Arizona’s rough-and-tumble roping scene and had to learn the game from the ground up, practicing on goats and donkeys before getting horseback. He’s kept them as part of his practice regimen, and he’s taught his three sons to rope the same way.

“We’ve worked with Cesar since he and Colter Todd first cracked out in the mid-2000s,” Content Director Chelsea Shaffer said. “He’s always been ready to help the next generation learn, and his hard-knock education make him an exceptionally relatable and knowledgeable teacher.”

Now residing in Casa Grande, Arizona, de la Cruz was raised in Tucson and mentored by his grandfather, NFR Qualifier Victor Aros, and uncle, George Aros, also an NFR Qualifier. The profound influence of the legendary “Aros Arena” in South Tucson has been instrumental in shaping de la Cruz’s journey.

de la Cruz’s wife, Arena, won the College National Finals Rodeo in the heading, and after having three boys, she joins de la Cruz in some videos in this series to rope as a family with their boys.

“Everybody’s had that feeling where they get in between swings and they could have thrown the swing before but they weren’t close enough, or the swing after but they feel like they missed their opportunity. That’s natural. It’s happened to all of us.”

Roping.com has partnered with RodeoVideo to bring the original Mega Matches into the 21st century, streaming on any device through the Roping.com app.

Mega Match I

Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper vs. Bobby Hurley and Allen Bach

The team of Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper matching the team of Bobby Hurley and Allen Bach for a marathon of 30 steers each. Three different score lengths, good cattle, good arena with the bottom gate closed…and the best two teams in the world. The lead changed hands several times but never did a team have a lead of more than a few seconds. After 29 steers for each team, the total time was the same…right down to the hundredth of a second. It all came down to the 30th steer! All four ropers share valuable insights between the runs making it a learning opportunity as well. Lots of slo mo. You’ll watch this 80-minute video over and over.

Mega Match II

Matt Tyler and Kory Koontz vs. Steve Purcella and Steve Northcott

Two of the hottest teams in the business in the mid-90s went head-to-head in this grueling 30-steer match. Steve Purcella and Steve Northcott battle it out against Matt Tyler and Kory Koontz. With three different score lengths, excellent cattle and two of the best teams in the world, the ingredients were just right for another history-making mega match. This is also an instructional video with lots of slow-mo, run analysis, strategy and information from these four legends.

Mega Match III

Kevin Stewart and Martin Lucero vs. Trevor Brazile and Wayne Folmer

Timeless talents of Kevin Stewart and Martin Lucero matched a young Trevor Brazile (hot off his first all-around gold buckle, before he was the official King of the Cowboys) and Wayne Folmer in this 30-steer match that you’ve just gotta see to believe. Brazile was on one of the greatest head horses of all time—Calhoon—and, like ALL Mega Matches, this one was down-to-the-wire.

Mega Match IV

Derrick Begay and Cesar de la Cruz vs. Matt Sherwood and Cory Petska

Shot in 2010, the fourth and final Mega Match pitted the then-young guns Derrick Begay and Cesar de la Cruz against two-time World Champ Matt Sherwood and future-World Champ Cory Petska. Rodeo Video shot the all-Arizona match in Gallup, New Mexico, in front of a live crowd with a red-rock background you’ve just got to see.

The 2022 American Rope Horse Futurity Association Heading World Champion Rhen Richard is partnering with Roping.com to stream his full rope horse training program, with the first masterclasses launching Oct. 9, 2023.

The series—with full training sessions with many of A&C Racing and Roping’s top prospects and Richard’s rodeo horses—features hours of at-home practice in the Richard family’s standout facility in Roosevelt, Utah.

“We are partnering with Roping.com to show ropers what it takes to make the kind of horses it takes to win at every level,” Rhen said. “I take teaching seriously, and showing people the little details that really make all the difference in a program is extremely important to me.”

Former Resistol Rookie of the Year and futurity trainer Kaden Richard and 2-year-old specialist Trinity Haggard also join Rhen to explain the depth of the A&C Racing and Roping program. Roping.com members will see broodmare pasture walk-throughs reviewing the science behind the crosses A&C Racing and Roping chooses, as well as explanations of conformation and bloodlines on large groups of yearlings set to enter the family’s training program.

“I don’t think there’s anywhere else ropers can see this many horses of this caliber, with someone like Rhen to walk us through the entire breeding program and reveal so much of their next-level thinking,” Content Director Chelsea Shaffer said. “Rhen’s ability to understand form and function of rope horses is eye-opening, and he explains that thinking in pastures fill of weanlings to in the arena on finished rope horses. This is perhaps our most complete look yet at a program of this caliber.”

For the first time, NFR heeler Tuftin is pulling back the curtain on his training program at DT Horses in Scottsdale, Arizona, taking Roping.com members through his start-to-finish system of making top-tier rope horses.

“Dean’s unique approach to building great horses focuses on getting each horse’s buy-in on his methods, building their confidence in a way that ropers at home can mimic,” Content Director Chelsea Shaffer said. “His ability to break down the smallest details of his horsemanship will help ropers just starting out, and it will shed light on the finer points of horsemanship for experienced ropers.”

Tuftin’s program got him to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and helped make AQHA/PRCA Heel Horse of the Year Rey Shines On Top, piloted by Brady Minor. His horses have gone on to win at the American Rope Horse Futurity Assocation World Championship under J.D. Yates, and they have picked up many AQHA World Champion titles. His mare, DT Hickorys Mistycat, was the first-ever Riata Buckle Futurity Open Champion on the heel side under Dakota Kirchenschlager, and he raised Billie Jack Saebens’ and Dixon Flowers AQHA/PRCA Heel Horse of the Year, DT Sugar Chex Whiz. He currently stands the World’s Greatest Horseman Champion Hickory Holly Time, and most of the horses in these videos are offspring of the red roan stud.

In this video brought to you by Cactus Ropes, Trevor Brazile and Miles Baker explain the reasons—and there are many of them—why slow cattle should be a part of your team roping practice.

“I think you’re kidding yourself a lot of times if you think you’ve moved on from slow cattle and still have a horse who has a lot of rate. Because if a cow is running fast enough, rate’s never an issue; he’s always staying in front of you.”

Two-time World Champion Patrick Smith is roping’s most in-demand online instructor, with industry-changing Driven, Legend and Driven 2.0, and in November 2023 he will release his newest instructional video, Stay Drivenexclusively streaming on Roping.com

Stay Driven will focus on the team component of the sport, an element often overlooked by ropers of all levels and will use never-before-seen camera angles and video technology to deepen viewers’ understanding of the sport.

“My son, Eli, is 10, and he’s jackpotting now,” Smith, 43, said. “When I sit at ropings to watch him, I see how much people don’t understand the basics of this being a team sport. You can’t just be a good header or a good heeler—you have to be a good partner. This video will dive into figuring out why you’re not winning at the jackpots, even if you’re a great roper at whatever number.”

NFR first-timer Tanner Tomlinson gets a clean head shot as two-time World Champ zeroes in on the heels in Round 5 of the 2022 NFR.

Shot over four months at Smith’s picturesque arena in Lipan, the video explores the angles necessary for success—including angles that helped Smith and partner Tanner Tomlinson break the NFR aggregate record in 2022 and exceed $100,000 in ProRodeo season earnings by Sept. 1.

“As a teacher in this sport, all of us rope so much, that all of this is second nature,” Smith explained. “We know what the tip of our rope is and where it is, we know the importance of keeping the cow’s head to set the run up. But we’ve never had the opportunity that we do today to really show it.

“Not everybody is going to be able to head the way Tanner Tomlinson heads or heel the way Clay O’Brien Cooper heels,” Smith added. “But there are things that these guys do that are blueprints that no matter what you do, you’re going to have to figure out your way of getting to that same point. With the technology we use, I think it’s really going to shed some light on being a better team mate, work on ourselves, communicate with our partner and be a better roper.
